    First Ladies: Part 2

First Ladies: Part 1 (226 items)

We last updated our site on 17-Sep-2017. The next update is scheduled for 14-Oct-2017.

Items relating to our American First Ladies from Martha Washington on up to the present. These include books, autographs, photos, jewelry, china & glassware, buttons, etc. Some anti-1st Lady items are also included, as well as a few items for those potential First Ladies who did not quite make it--remember Eleanor McGovern, Peggy Goldwater and Edith Willkie? Although there have been serious collectors of First Lady items for decades (much of the material offered in this listing is from a collection started over 30 years ago), it has become an expanded collecting area during the past two decades. This is undoubtedly due, not so much because of the more interesting & the variety of First Lady items available, but because of the First Ladies, themselves. Recent First Ladies have been REAL personalities, and they have developed their own followers and dedicated admirers. Recent First Ladies have been so different from one and another, but large segments of the population can relate to them...Barbara Bush, Laura Bush, Rosalynn Carter, Hillary Clinton, Betty Ford, Lady Bird Johnson, Jacqueline Kennedy, Pat Nixon, Nancy Reagan...so entirely different, yet strong leaders in their own right, deserving of our admiration, and worthy of being a "collectible entity." Many items represented here depict our First Ladies as an equal, or a partner, with the President. Some relate to the strength of the First Lady as a campaign vote getter, or support a special First Lady cause or issue. A few remain somewhat condescending; always that "secondary" role: The button with the Carters pictured, saying "Join Jimmy & His Best Friend" (yes, they mean Rosalynn). Or, the one "Betty Ford Start Packing, The Carters are Coming"...why can't Jerry help pack, why just Betty? Anyway, we hope you enjoy these two listings. They have been segmented by eras, 1980-Present, 1952-1976, 1932-1948, 1896-1928, 1860-1892, pre-1860.

First Ladies: Typed quotation from Lady Bird Johnson's book, "A White House Diary" signed "Lady Bird Johnson." in bold black letters. Quote: "Wednesday, November 29, 1967. Lyndon talked of McNamara's leaving, relayed the sequence of events from the beginning - in August, I hink it was, when McNamara stayed behind after a meeting and said, "I want to talk to you about a personal, personnel matter." And then he told him that in the years he had been here he had had many offers of jobs, some of them for fabulous salaries. Bob had told all of them that he was going to continue to serve the President as long as he wanted him, but that now the Presidency of the World Bank was going to become vacant, and he wanted Lyndon to know that that was one job he was interested in. Bob also thought that it might well be that in the job of Defense, the Administration would benefit from a fresh person. Lyndon had listened and said nothing. He went on through it all until has last conversation with Bob just an hour ago. Bob was at home. He wanted Lyndon to know how horrid all the furor had been. Lyndon said he sounded as if he were almost in tears. And then Lyndon told us, "Except for one, this is the hardest day I have spent in this job." I have seldom felt as sorry for him. The sense of loneliness and separation is deep." (Signed) "Lady Bird Johnson" $100.00
